Materials and texture
It is handmade in India by skilled craftspeople with high quality materials and a plain design. The ends have slightly raised borders in a thinner braided weave. The weave is the same on both sides so this makes every rug reversible too.
Its texture is flat woven and soft to touch. Its thick braided weave makes it heavy and it sits sturdy on the floor. The rug will not move around on the floor and should not need any underlay.
Size and shape
The jute rugs come in two different sizes. This is 244x300cm and 244x330cm. These sizes are most complementary to the rest of Emily’s House rug collection. The jute rugs are new made, unused and handmade with excellent jute quality.
The rugs are woven in a workshop in India with focus on good working conditions and fair wages in line with The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, key UN conventions, ILO conventions and recommendations.
Maintaining and caring for your carpet
Jute is a hardwearing and durable material with a plain soft warm brown colour. It is low in maintenance and both sides are woven in the same way so it is also reversible. It is best to vacuum it on a lower setting and make sure you also do the reverse now and then as just as much dust accumulates there, as on the front.
The quicker you deal with spills, the less chance there is of it staining. The effective way to treat a spill, for example red wine, is to apply water to begin with to dilute the stain, followed by mopping it with a kitchen towel straight away. Start from the outside of the stain and work inwards to limit the affected area, but do not rub the stain as this can damage the yarn. Once a carpet gets wet, it is important to dry it out thoroughly afterwards, to prevent rotting.
Don’t use any bleach or chemical treatments as they might take the stain out, but leave a lighter stain instead. When in doubt, professional carpet cleaning will always remain the best choice. If you need advice on this, pleased get in touch.
Jute is a long soft material that can be spun into coarse strong threads. Jute is one of the most affordable natural fibres, and second only to cotton in the amount produced and variety of uses. The jute plant needs standing water to thrive. The suitable climate for growing jute is warm and wet and therefore South India is great for jute production with its monsoon climate, humidity and temperatures from 20-40degrees.
