Green Cactus Silk Handwoven Moroccan kilim Rug
Beautiful green Moroccan kilim rug, handwoven by Berber women in the 1960ies!
The material is very soft to touch and has a nice sheen on it. It has soft geometric design in faded reds and ochres with fringes both ends.
The kilim has a flexible handle and is semi lightweight. Depending on the underfloor, it would benefit from an underlay.

Resistant and very soft to the touch, this kilim rug is hand loomed with real silk of Aloe Vera Cactus cultivated in the Saharan desert. This silk is then colored with herbal dyes and minerals derived from roots, berries, spices, leaves and wood. A 100% artisanal and ecological fabric respecting the ancient Berber tradition.
The Mountain tribes use the wool from their goats or sheep while the Desert tribes use the hairs of their camels or plant fibres. One common fibre comes from the Aloe Vera plant, belonging to the spikey cactus like (but not actually a cactus) Agavoideae family. After they are extracted, the fibres are dyed using natural vegetable dyes leaving a beautiful sheen, giving it a silky appearance, hence the name “cactus silk”.
The silky feel and lush green colour will brighten up any floor, but also works perfect as a wrinkle-free throw for a sofa or a bed.
It is handwoven by artisan craftswomen from the Berber tribes in the Atlas Mountains.
It is flat woven with a slick look and elegant feel to it.
It has a soft geometric pattern in ochre, red and whites.
It has a medium size of 170cm wide and 270cm long.
Typical for handmade rugs is that they do not necessarily have perfect symmetrical designs. They have imperfections in design and this is also part of the charm of handwoven rugs and what makes every rug unique.
Tribal rugs are made by heart, without any drawing or cartoon to follow. This means the weaver has the freedom to invent the rug while weaving and be the artist of her own creation, instead of ‘simply’ executing a specific drawing or cartoon.
In this rug a symmetrical pattern is being used with decorative motifs in a well balanced design.
Looking after your rug
It is sensible to give your rug a good shake outside every couple of months and hoover it regularly. Every four or five times you hoover your rug, make sure the reverse is also vacuumed because just as much dust an accumulate there, as on the front.
The cactus silk rug stays best with dry clean only!
The quicker you deal with spills, the less chance there is of it staining. The effective way to treat a spill, for example red wine, is to apply water to begin with to dilute the stain, followed by mopping it with a kitchen towel straight away.
Start from the outside of the stain and work inwards to limit the affected area, but do not rub the stain as this can damage the yarn. Once a carpet gets wet, it is important to dry it out thoroughly afterwards, to prevent the material from rotting.
Don’t use any bleach or chemical treatments as they might take the stain out, but leave a discoloured stain instead. When in doubt, professional carpet cleaning will always remain the best choice. If you need advice on this, pleased get in touch.
