Materials and texture
This blue kilim rug in large size is handmade with 100% premium wool. It has a soft texture and is comfortable under your feet. Note it is handwoven with a mixed weaving technique, giving it a very lively and interesting texture.
It has a good weight to it and underlay should not be required.
If you do wish to add an underlay to add thickness, please find my recommendation here.
This blue Turkish kilim rug has a contemporary look and feel to it. It has a simple design with olive green and ochre yellow geometric motifs on a blue background.
It would work well in a kitchen area, or a space that has more footfall and traffic and therefore needs a more hardwearing and durable texture.
Selecting the right size:
When it comes to selecting the size of the rug, each room is different, however here are some guidelines that are worth keeping in mind!
Sitting room: The front legs of the sofa or armchairs should sit on the rug and there should be an overhang of at least 15cm at the sides
Bedroom: The most popular options are to either sit a large rug underneath the whole bed, bearing in mind a large proportion will be covered, or to opt for a runner on one or both sides of the bed. In either case, there should be a 20cm gap between the side tables and the edge of the rug, still ensuring that there is some rug to land on when getting out of bed.
As a rule of thumb, you should allow an overhang of at least 45cm at the base and sides. Personally I prefer it slightly more generous, with an overhang of about 60cm to 85cm, depending on the size of the room and furnitures.
Dining room: Low-pile rugs such as flatweaves like this and hand-knotted pieces with a short pile are best here so chairs can slide in and out without catching. The rug should also be large enough so that the chairs do not fall off the edge when pulled out.
A rule of thumb the chairs should sit on the rug with an overhang of about 20cm. Alternatively, measure the dining table and add approximately 120cm-150cm to the length and/or width, depending on the shape of the table and layout of the room.

This blue Turkish kilim rug is handwoven by skilled craftspeople. Typical for handmade rugs is that they do not necessarily have perfect symmetrical designs. They have imperfections in design and this is also part of the charm of handwoven rugs and what makes every rug unique.
Maintaining and caring for your carpet
This large blue Turkish rug is soft under foot yet hardwearing and durable. It is low in maintenance and requires just a little hoovering now and then. It is best to vacuum it on a lower setting and make sure you also do the reverse now and then as just as much dust accumulates there, as on the front. Furthermore, it is sensible to give your rug a good shake outside every couple of months.
The quicker you deal with spills, the less chance there is of it staining. The effective way to treat a spill, for example red wine, is to apply water to begin with to dilute the stain, followed by mopping it with a kitchen towel straight away.
Start from the outside of the stain and work inwards to limit the affected area, but do not rub the stain as this wcan damage the yarn. Once a carpet gets wet, it is important to dry it out thoroughly afterwards, to prevent the wool from rotting.
Don’t use any bleach or chemical treatments as they might take the stain out, but leave a white stain instead. When in doubt, professional carpet cleaning will always remain the best choice. If you need advice on this, pleased get in touch.
